Why should Muslims, Congress Party cry hoarse over Mulayam Yadav-Kalyan Singh bonhomie?

Come elections – parliamentary or assembly, Muslims and Congress Party are back at their old game in Uttar Pradesh (UP) yet again. This time bonhomie between Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and erstwhile ‘Maulana’ Mulayam Singh Yadav and Babri Masjid demolition hero Kalyan Singh is raising the hackles of so-called secular Congress Party and poor, always-power-hungry Muslims. Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Mohammed Azam Khan obliquely attacked powerful SP national general secretary Amar Singh on 20 February 2009 for hurting Muslim sentiments by ganging up with former UP chief minister and Babri Masjid demolition hero Kalyan Singh. Amar Singh is currently a Rajya Sabha MP while Kalyan Singh earlier led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state, which spearheaded the Babri Masjid demolition campaign. However, Kalyan Singh resigned from chief ministership after the mosque was demolished in December 1992 and the Congress Party-led Central government under P.V. Narasimha Rao’s leadership imposed President’s Rule in the state.

Khan, who is national general secretary of SP, held a press conference to vent out his anger at Amar Singh without taking his name, which was obvious though. Khan said, “Some people who obtained Rajya Sabha membership with our support are busy tarnishing my image and harming the party organization. Such people, without having popular contact with the electorate, have been conspiring by framing false charges against me. But I shall defeat the designs of such conspirators who want to harm me and the Samajwadi Party ideology.” Khan is also currently the deputy leader of the opposition in the Uttar Pradesh assembly.

“The Rajya Sabha member has hurt the feelings of the Muslim community by projecting Kalyan Singh as a great leader, extending open invitation to Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and BJP leader L.K. Advani to join the Samajwadi Party, and promoting actress Jayaprada in the political arena,” Khan said, and asked how the Rajya Sabha member can dare to project Kalyan Singh as pro-Muslim. It may be recalled that Amar Singh had last month defended the party’s move to join hands with Kalyan Singh.

Despite SP chief’s advice not to air his grievances in public, Azam Khan chose to do so again within weeks when he burst out against his party for joining hands with Kalyan Singh. It seems that now Khan has ultimately made up his mind to give a jolt to his party during this election year by ultimately resigning from it in near future. Khan is apparently more peeved with Amar Singh. His anger against Kalyan Singh though is seemingly misdirected and just an excuse to get at Amar Singh at all costs.

Azam Khan and other Muslim leaders’ ‘genuine’ love for Indian Muslims
How much love does Azam Khan has for Muslims in his state as well as for those in his country can only be gauged from several of his past actions. Khan, who was the leader of Samajwadi Party in the state legislature, along with Amar Singh was instrumental in garnering support for the largest ever 98-member ministry led by SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in October 2003. The ministry was installed after dethroning the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state. To show his gratitude, Mulayam Singh Yadav rewarded 30 of the 40 BSP defectors with ministerial berths. Even the 14-member Ajit Singh-led Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Kalyan Singh led 4-member Rashtriya Kranti Party (RKP) managed to secure berths for half of their legislators. Kalyan Singh’s son Rajveer Singh alias Raju Bhaiya was also part of the ministry, which included Azam Khan who held an important portfolio. While staking claim to form an alternative government and urging state governor Vishnukant Shastri to dismiss the Mayawati government, Khan had then confidently claimed before mediapersons, "We have the support of 204 members in the 403-member state assembly. We have enlisted the support of 37 BJP legislators, who are fed up with the party and the government. We also have support of 14 independents and the Left parties. Congress Party is also giving us outside support." Kalyan Singh after deserting the BJP during 2003 assembly elections formed his own political party RKP and extended support to SP and helped Mulayam become the chief minister. However, after a year he broke ties with Mulayam and rejoined the BJP in 2004. It was quite obvious that Azam Khan chose to disregard morality and the pangs of his Muslim conscience then in order to ally with Babri Masjid demolition hero Kalyan Singh to gain power anyhow after ouster of Mayawati-led government. Where was Azam Khan’s professed love for Muslims then particularly when the wounds of Babri Masjid demolition were quite fresh for the Indian Muslims? Why is Azam Khan opposing Kalyan Singh’s alliance with the Samajwadi Party now? It may be recalled that Kalyan Singh’s son Rajveer Singh has again rejoined the Samajwadi Party recently when parliamentary polls are round the corner. He has also been made general secretary of the party. Kalyan Singh, who was BJP vice-president, has also resigned from all party posts on 20 January 2009. He has also expressed his desire to campaign for the Samajwadi Party and independently contest the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

Besides Azam Khan, there are other Muslim Samajwadi Party leaders who have vehemently opposed the current Mulayam Yadav-Kalyan Singh deal. Prominent among those are 5-time Lok Sabha member Saleem Sherwani, Rajya Sabha member Shafiqur Rehman Burke and sitting SP MP Haji Akhlaq from Meerut. Khan has already gone on record denouncing Mulayam’s deal with Kalyan Singh. “Kalyan Singh is a hardcore Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) man who was directly responsible for the demolition of the Babri Masjid. How can I brush shoulders with a man like him? What has led Mulayam Singhji to go for such an alignment,” Khan said.

Even Saleem Sherwani has made up his mind to quit Smajawadi Party and would be contesting Lok Sabha polls from Budaun constituency in the state as an independent. Sherwani has won from this constituency for five times. However, now Mulayam Singh Yadav has ignored Sherwani’s claim to the seat yet again and has decided to field his own nephew Dharmendra Yadav from here this time. Earlier, Dharmendra Yadav won the last election from Mainpuri where he earned notoriety for allegedly furthering his personal interests and neglecting the constituency. Budaun constituency weighed heavily on Mulayam Yadav’s mind since it has about 316,000 Yadav votes and 290,000 Muslim votes. Considering the majority Yadav votes here Mulayam thought of gifting this constituency to his nephew on a platter. Sherwani now sees Mulayam’s move as yet another example of extending family rule and ignoring his interests. This has apparently angered Sherwani greatly, and thus became the sole reason for him to question alliance with Babri demolition hero Kalyan Singh. This is also for the first time that Sherwani has raised Kalyan issue, which he ignored on umpteen occasions. This simply shows he doesn’t have any genuine love for Muslims but for his own interests only.

Azam Khan’s other misdemeanors; likens Rahul Gandhi to a “Pig”
Several of Azam Khan’s actions can be cited that would expose him for what he really stands for. Khan, who was then Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister and a prominent Muslim face of Samajwadi Party, had raised the demand for a separate ‘Muslim Pradesh’ in Western UP on 16 July 2006 during a public meeting at Ghaziabad. This was done keeping assembly elections in view in order to counter the influence of coalition partner Rashtriya Lok Dal and to subvert RLD chief Ajit Singh’s demand for ‘Harit Pradesh’ in the region. Azam Khan very well knows the current fate of Muslims that has befallen them ever since the partition of India and the creation of a separate Islamic nation of Pakistan. As such, instead of ameliorating the sufferings of Muslims in his state and the country, Azam Khan chose to raise a separatist demand, which would have certainly done no good to his Muslim brethren.

On 1 July 2007, one Zulfiqar Khan lodged a police complaint against Azam Khan for constantly issuing life threats and encroaching his agricultural land for construction of the new Tehsil building in Madar Kohna area of Rampur district. Besides Khan, the police FIR was lodged against the then District Magistrate Mohd. Mustafa, Tehsildar Shamshad Hussain, and a Public Works Department executive engineer under section 109, 119, 120 (b), 226, 174, 177, 341, 192, 217, 431, 442, 447, 506, 383, 384, 389, 430 and 432 of IPC. In another case, Azam Khan was booked for illegally constructing a boundary wall and blocking way to the Mohd. Ali Jauhar University on 29 June 2007. Yet another case was registered against Khan for assaulting villagers near the Mohd. Ali Jauhar University in Rampur on 23 June 2007. Khan is the Chancellor for Life of Mohd. Ali Jauhar University, which was created by Mulayam Singh Yadav during his chief ministership. Further, Khan was booked under another case on 14 June 2007. The case related to the seizure of 500 sewing machines and 400 blankets from Samajwadi Party office in Rampur that was allegedly purchased from the District Urban Development Agency funds when Khan was Urban Development Minister. The purchase was done keeping in view of the elections. Thus, at least four cases were registered against Azam Khan within a period of 17 days.

Azam Khan’s misdemeanor doesn’t stop here only. It seems Khan needs to get some lessons in propriety and public decency. Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan likened Rahul Gandhi to a “Pig” at a public rally in Ghazipur in eastern UP. On 26 April 2007 Khan had told his audience in Ghazipur that if Rahul Gandhi referred to the Babri Masjid as a mere structure, he would look worse than a pig to him. Khan’s crass comment was telecast by a TV channel much to the chagrin of Samajwadi Party.

What lies in store for likes of Azam Khan and Congress Party?
It is obvious now that Muslim leaders like Azam Khan, Saleem Sherwani, Shafiqur Rahman Burke and Haji Akhlaq are serving their own interests rather than those of Muslims. And, without any tinge of shame whatsoever they find it suitable to oppose Mulayam Yadav-Kalyan Singh deal whenever they find the goings becoming tough for them. Their present opposition should therefore be seen in this backdrop only and not out of any genuine love for Muslims. Azam Khan has been finding himself marginalized ever since Amar Singh entered into Samajwadi Party and gradually became powerful. Earlier, Mulayam Singh-Azam Khan duo used to hog limelight more on the political horizon of Uttar Pradesh. But things admittedly are now different for Azam Khan with Amar Singh capturing his prized space alongside ‘Netaji’ Mulayam Singh Yadav. For Azam Khan, the climax has now reached as far as his political career with Samajwadi Party is concerned. It’s ‘Now or Never’ for him to save his flagging political career, and end uncertainty or becoming irrelevant rather sooner than later in state politics. With Amar Singh at the helm in the party even Saleem Sherwani, Shafiqur Rahman Burke and Haji Akhlaq are facing the same fate of Azam Khan.

When seen in a perspective, Azam Khan however finds the going tougher when compared to other Muslim leaders. With his voices of rebellion being raised against the party at intervals, it looks imminent that Khan is going to quit the Samajwadi Party and jump on to the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party’s bandwagon as the general elections approaches near. Given his “Pig” remarks against Rahul Gandhi, it rather looks highly improbable that Azam Khan would even dare to approach the party to gain entry at least for now. It is also unlikely that Congress Party would admit Khan so soon in the party fold. Other Muslim leaders, being political weathercocks that they are, may join Bahujan Samaj Party or even Congress Party, depending on their own circumstances.

However, why should it matter for any one of them, whether they earlier backed the alliance between Babri Masjid demolition hero Kalyan Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav, or they now join Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party or Congress Party. Muslims across the country have still not forgiven Congress Party for its role in the demolition of Babri Masjid during the prime ministership of Narasimha Rao. Mayawati’s actions are also suspect in the eyes of Muslims. They simply refuse to forget Chief Minister Mayawati’s campaign for Chief Minister Narendra Modi during 2002 Gujarat assembly elections after the worst ever massacre took place in the state against Muslims. Not a single Muslim minister resigned from the Mayawati cabinet after she returned having campaigned for Narendra Modi. Mayawati is also famous for joining hands with Bharatiya Janata Party whenever need be. After all, it shouldn’t be of any concern to Muslim leaders or Congress Party as such to support Kalyan Singh or Mayawati as long as it suits their interests. The ultimate sufferers remain none else than Indian Muslims because they have genuine love for their leaders who prove to be rude betrayers instead leaving the community forlorn, uncared for, hapless morons as ever.

Fake conversions, sham marriages: Making a mockery of Islam

By Danish Ahmad Khan

The saga of Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali, now (in)famously known as Chand Mohammad-Fiza love story, has finally ended into a tailspin of sorts. A peeved Fiza, who allegedly attempted suicide by consuming 25 non-fatal sedative alprazolam tablets, narrated her harrowing tale before the mediapersons in Chandigarh after her newly-wed husband suddenly left her house where he has been staying for the last two months. Chand Mohammad, the elder son of former Haryana CM Bhajan Lal, after disappearing from Fiza’s house was reportedly spotted near Raj Ghat in New Delhi in an inebriated condition by police who brought him to the Daryaganj police station. Later, he left the police station saying that he would go back on his own. Chand Mohammad, however, went missing again only to resurface later outside Sector 14 residence of his brother Kuldeep Bishnoi to clarify before TV channels that he was missing his first wife Seema Bishnoi and children and that he could not stay away from them. He also said that he has not deserted Fiza and would like to stay with her as well.

Chander Mohan (43) alias Chand Mohammad and Anuradha Bali (37), now called Fiza Parveen, secretly converted to Islam and their nikaah solemnized by a Maulvi [Muslim priest] in Meerut in November 2008. Chand Mohammad paid Rs. 5 lakh as meher [Bridal price] to Fiza in order to skirt Hindu bigamy laws. They surfaced as husband and wife in December. The duo held a press conference to announce their marriage and revealed their plan to have a honeymoon in Switzerland and residence in Delhi. Professing their undying love for each other, they promised to live together till the last breath. They courted each other for the past five years before entering into wedlock as neo-Muslims.

Kalka MLA Chander Mohan, married to Seema Bishnoi for 13 years, was holding the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana before his conversion to Islam. Anuradha Bali alias Fiza was married to a Mohali businessman but was divorced just after one year of marriage. Anuradha was a former Deputy Advocate General in Punjab, but before her marriage to Chander Mohan was serving as Assistant Advocate General of Haryana. Chander Mohan and Anuradha Bali were both not seen in public nor attending to their professional duties for the past one month giving credence to rumours about their elopement, which ultimately proved to be true after they resurfaced as lovestruck newly-weds.

The news about Chander Mohan’s conversion to Islam and second marriage came as rude shock to the Haryana government as well as his father ex-CM Bhajan Lal. They had to pay dearly for their ‘misdemeanours’ and had to lose their high-profile jobs. ‘Misdemenours’ because they had apparently converted to Islam to solemnize their respective second marriage. Chief Minister of Congress-led Haryana government Bhupinder Singh Hooda sacked Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan on November 26 on the plea that he absented from his office for past some time. Anuradha Bali too was sacked on the similar plea. An agitated Chand Mohammad’s father Bhajan Lal sharply reacted announcing that he has now disowned his rebel son Chander Mohan from his property and condemned his second marriage as a “shameless act”.

Fiza is now puzzled about her status. She says, “I don’t know what my status is today. I don’t even know if I am his wife or not. He is not coming out openly to tell. He used to send me messages for the last three years. He used to blackmail me that he will kill himself if I did not marry him. He threatened to shoot himself. I have been betrayed in true love. He has not spoken to me directly. I don't even know whether he is now Chander Mohan or Chand Mohammed. A very bad game has been played with my life.” Fiza also claims, “He was shown saying that I am a ‘badhiya cheez’ (good object). Am I a vegetable, cold drink or lassi that he said so? I have been used.” Fiza is now thinking in terms of seeking revenge for Chand Mohammad’s betrayal. In a latest development, Fiza, after great of confusion on whether to press rape charges or take some other legal recourse, has lodged a police complaint (FIR) against Chander Mohan on 16 February 2009 foisting rape charges on him.

How is Islam abused, defamed and mocked at?
However, this is not for the first time a Hindu couple secretly embraced Islam only to marry for the second time. Chander Mohan is already having his first wife who has not been divorced yet. Anuradha Bali is a divorcee and was looking for another man in her life to end her solitude. After embracing Islam and subsequent marriage, Chander Mohan cleverly escaped anti-bigamy laws under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955. Besides Chander Mohan and Anuradha Bali, Bollywood stars Dharmendra and Hema Malini had also secretly embraced Islam only to marry for the second time and gave their marriage a legal cover. Now, Dharmendra and Hema Malini remain a happily wed couple but never accepted Islam as their religion though being married only after embracing Islam. It may be recalled that there are several Hindu couples that married for the second time without divorcing their first wife or embracing Islam. Second marriage of Bollywood stars is a case in point. Raj Babbar married Smita Patil despite being already married to Zaheera, daughter of a widely respected Muslim poet-scholar. Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s second marriage is also another example. Paswan married for a second time without divorcing his first wife. The first wife is a Dalit, the caste that Paswan belongs to, while his second wife follows the Sikh religion. In yet another instance according to the BBC report of 9th February, 20-year-old Sabra Ahmadzai from Afghanistan left her parents home in November last year and is now in India for the past six weeks to trace her husband Major Chandshekhar Pant. Sabra worked as a Hindi translator in a hospital in Kabul and met Major Pant, a doctor in the Indian Army. Major Pant converted to Islam and married Sabra. After marriage Sabra could only spend fifteen days together with Major Pant when he was transferred back to India. Sitting at the shrine of Hazrat Nizamuddin in New Delhi with her hands clasped in prayers Sabra says, "He promised to return with his parents and left. In six months he only called me three times, and in his last call he told me Sabra you are young and you can marry again - I have two kids and a wife from before." Sabra recently met Major Pant now on posting in his hilly hometown of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. She has registered an anti-bigamy case against Major Pant and has vowed to pursue this case to logical end till justice is done to her. The Army has also so far not taken any action whatsoever against Major Pant to set the record straight.

But the recent marriage of Chander Mohan and Anuradha Bali has again raised a controversy. This also once again brings Dharmendra and Hema Malini’s marriage into the eye of storm. Both marriages those of Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali and Dharmendra-Hema Malini are similar in nature. The only exception being that Dharmendra-Hema Malini remain happily wed couples while Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali’s marriage is on the verge of imminent break-up. The saddest part being that Chander Mohan and Anuradha Bali couldn’t even spend their honeymoon in Switzerland, and the news of their break-up and legal battles is constantly doing the rounds.

It is apparent that in both the marriages, the religion of Islam has been abused, defamed and mocked at in the most rude and crass manner. Dharmendra and Hema Malini were never questioned or penalized in a court of law for misusing Islam to achieve their ulterior motives, and that too without remaining Muslims. Ever Major Chandrashekhar Pant, who married Sabra Ahmadzai after converting to Islam, misused Islam only to satiate his sexual desire and leaving Sabra in the lurk and unclear about her current marital status after returning back to India. The most saddest part, however, is that no Muslim organization or clerics worth their salt ever came forward to take action against the Maulvis who allegedly solemnized the ‘nikaah’ of Dharmendra-Hema Malini and Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali, or cared to ask these couples as to why they misused Islam for their marriage by not adhering to their new faith for their entire lifetime. But Chander Mohan went even a step further in making Islam a football, which could be kicked about whenever need be by all and sundry without being ever objected to by the faithfuls whatsoever. Chander Mohan misused Islam only to satiate his carnal desires. According to his wife Fiza, he was shown as saying that she was a ‘badhiya cheez’ (good object). She later strongly objected to his remarks and asked whether she was a vegetable, cold drink or lassi that he can consume whenever he wants to. Chander Mohan’s remarks about Fiza in itself shows how much he abhors and disrespects womenfolk and that he only wanted to enjoy women and derive sexual pleasure from them. This also shows that he has scant respect for Islam or even his own religion. He did not have any genuine intention to embrace Islam, but only wanted to escape anti-bigamy laws as per Hindu Marriage Act of 1955. Had both Chander Mohan and Anuradha Bali genuinely intended to embrace Islam and lead their married lives as ideal Muslims, they should have done so long before during their five years of courtship itself. But during the five years they only made fun and frolic, and only a month before their marriage they secretly embraced Islam and immediately married.

Muslims have always been accused of using Islam as springboard to spread terrorism in the name of jihad, but what should Muslims do when their religion is used by people of other religions only to satiate their sexual needs in an illegal manner, which neither their religion nor Islam ever permits. The shamelessness of Chander Mohan can also be gauged from the fact that reacting to his dismissal from the post of Deputy CM, Chander Mohan said, “Politicians across party lines are guilty of having affairs and if he begins to expose all that he knows, it will not augur well for any party.” Chander Mohan also wants to prove that Islam in fact obligates Muslims to keep number of wives to fulfill their sexual needs in a legal manner. This is, however, nothing but a slur on this great religion and a hard slap on the face of entire Muslim community for taking for granted that Islam is above board and cannot be abused or defamed by anyone.

Besides Chander Mohan, another fraud was committed by his illustrious father ex-CM Bhajan Lal. He not only told lies but also fooled the people and media in his statement about disowning Chander Mohan from family property. Chander Mohan claimed before the media that his father didn’t disown him only after conversion to Islam and subsequent second marriage, but he was ‘disowned’ long before. The wily Bhajan Lal merely made an announcement before the media after such a long time. In fact, Chander Mohan was “disowned” by the family in the sense that under a family settlement his share in the property was transferred in the name of his minor son, Sidharth. According to the legal records, the property was transferred in the name of Sidharth with only Chander Mohan’s consent. The settlement was signed by concerned parties on 20th February 2008. It was not only Bhajan Lal, and Chander Mohan’s mother, Jasma Devi, who transferred his share in their property to their eldest grandson, but it Chander Mohan himself who transferred his property in the name of Sidharth. Chander Mohan signed the settlement just a few days after the death of his son Mohit, with whom he was greatly attached. After nine days of the signing of settlement, Kuldeep Bishnoi (Chander Mohan’s younger brother) and Siddharth filed suits before a Hisar court and requested to issue declarations indicating that they were now the owners of the property acquired through their respective share as per settlement. Within a month the court issued decrees in favour of plaintiffs. After the decree, Sidharth (Chander Mohan’s nominee) became the owner of properties that included a Panchkula house in Sector 8; two plots in Sector 15-A, Hisar; a shop in Nai Mandi, Adampur; one flat on Aurangzeb Road, Delhi; and agricultural land at different places (all earlier owned by Jasma Devi). He also got an industrial plot in Panchkula which was earlier jointly owned by his father Chander Mohan and uncle Kuldeep and a booth in Adampur earlier owned by Chander Mohan. One house in Model Town, Adampur, owned by SRB Investment Pvt Ltd, 135, Golf Links, New Delhi, and a piece of agricultural land owned by Seth Enterprises Pvt Ltd, Golf Links, New Delhi, were also transferred to Sidharth. Chander Mohan's determination to marry Anuradha Bali was known to the family in 2007 itself. It is apparent therefore that the transfer of Chander Mohan’s property to Sidharth can be construed as a sort of alimony paid by him to his first wife Seema, or this also be considered as a preemptive step against any future claims by anyone against Chander Mohan which would very well have occurred with his marriage to Anuradha Bali. Chander Mohan thus made a clever move by transferring his property to his son to ward off any future claims by Anuradha Bali, and also continue to enjoy her after his so-called marriage.

Polygamy in Islam & Hinduism
Islam permits polygamy and has allowed four wives at a time with the condition that they be treated equally. According to the Holy Qur’an taking more than one wife is only permissible, not ordained. The Holy Qur’an says: "And if you fear that you cannot act equitably towards orphans, then marry such women as seem good to you, two, three and four, but if you fear that you may not do justice to them, then (marry) only one" (4: 3). It may be noted that this verse was revealed after the battle of Uhud. In that battle, many Muslim men died and as such a great social problem for the protection of widows and orphans arose, necessitating an institutionalized polygamy for a convenient solution of the problem.

Even in Hinduism, Manu sanctioned polygamy. There has been a great deal of controversy as to whether the Hindu Law sanctioned polygamy. This, however, becomes clear if the Law of Manu regarding polygamy is reviewed. According to Manu, following is the Law on this subject:
(1.) "For the first marriage of twice-born men (wives) of equal caste are recommended, but for those who through desire proceed (to marry again) the following females, (chosen) according to the (direct) order (of the castes) are most approved." (Here follows the list of women who may be approved of) (Manu, iii 12).

(2.) "It twice-born men wed women of their own and of other (lower castes) the seniority, honor, and habitation of those (wives) must be (settled) according to the order of the castes (Varna)." (Manu, ix 85).

(3.) "If, after one damsel has been shown, another be given to the bridegroom, he may marry the both, for the same price that Manu ordained," (Manu, viii 204).

(4.) "Among all (twice-born men) the wife of equal caste alone (not a wife of a different caste by any means), shall personally attend her husband and assist him in his daily sacred rites." (Manu, ix 86).

(5.) "But he who foolishly causes that (duty) to be performed by another while his wife of equal caste is alive, is declared by the ancients (to be) as (despicable) as a Kandala (spring from the) Brahamana caste." (Manu, ix 87).

Thus, the above quotations amply indicate that polygamy was sanctioned according to the Law of Manu. This has also been settled in the Courts of British India that there is no restriction on a Hindu as to the number of his wives he can keep, or that one may marry again without his wife's consent. However, according to the current practice Hindus could contract a second marriage only after the death of their first wife or divorce. Not otherwise. And, this surely defies the Law of Manu.

The controversial marriage of Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali has clearly brought into focus the ambiguity in the law regarding second marriage by Hindus after converting to Islam. The Supreme Court in a celebrated 1995 order held such marriage illegal saying that bigamy could attract a sentence of up to seven years in jail and fine. Tahir Mahmood, a Law Commission member and noted Islamic scholar, says, “If a married Hindu during the subsistence of his first marriage embraces Islam and marries again it is illegal and punishable under the Indian Penal Code even if conversion is absolutely genuine.”

According to Islamic scholar and Law Commission member Tahir Mahmood, “If a married Hindu during the subsistence of his first marriage embraces Islam and marries again it is illegal and punishable under the Indian Penal Code even if conversion is absolutely genuine.” Even in the Sarla Mudgal case of 1995, the Supreme Court of India had ruled that a Hindu husband, married under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, cannot marry a second time simply by embracing Islam. If he remarries without lawfully dissolving the first marriage, he would be guilty of bigamy. Under Section 494 of the IPC, bigamy invites a punishment of up to seven years in jail and fine. According to Mahmood, “Even born Muslims are not allowed such reckless prodigality by their religion and its law. The idea that Islam gave a license for indulging in bigamy to anyone converting was ‘sheer nonsense’. The traditional Islamic law allowed bigamy in exceptional cases only. And, this is permissible only if the man treats his wives with absolute justice.”

It may be recalled that akin to Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali’s case, one Jitender Mathur, a Hindu by birth, converted to Islam ten years after his marriage just only to marry Sunita (who also converted to Islam and adopted the Muslim name of Fatima). He was married to his first wife Meena Mathur in 1978, and had three children by her. In 1988 he married Sunita alias Fatima. Later on he reverted to Hinduism leaving behind Fatima in the lurch, who refused to revert to Hinduism any more. Meena Mathur and Fatima both petitioned the Supreme Court that declared that unless an existing marriage was dissolved, remarriage by any spouse was void and punishable under section 494 IPC.

In one of the similar ruling, a Supreme Court judge said, “A person who mockingly adopts another religion where plurality of marriage is permitted to renounce a previous marriage and desert wife cannot be permitted to take advantage of this exploitation as religion is not a commodity to be exploited.”

Who’s responsible for this sorry plight of Islam?
Though in the case of Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali some Muslim ulemas from Darul-Ifta (the fatwa department of the Islamic seminary Darul-Uloom Deoband) have condemned Chander Mohan for his ‘lowly act’. But this verbal condemnation is surely not enough. What about the clerics who solemnized the ‘nikaah’ of Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali and Dharmendra-Hema Malini? The clerics have been let off without any rebuke or penal action whatsoever by the reputed Islamic seminary. This brings their true love for Islam into question. Such clerics are bringing disrepute to Islam and constitute the part of the bandwagon of Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali and Dharmendra-Hema Malini in damaging Islam itself by their lowly acts. Even Muslim organizations such as All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), All India Muslim Majlise Mushawarat (AIMMM), All India Milli Council (AIMC), Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Jamiatul Ulama-e Hind (JUH) etc. are equally responsible for perpetrating such crimes as they have neither raised their voice or taken any penal action whatsoever against the culprits. This unholy coterie of Muslim clerics and organizations are gravely responsible for the sorry plight of Islam and Muslims in India as such. They are hell-bent, it seems, on strangulating the great religion of Islam just to achieve their selfish goals. Action should have been taken by now against couples like Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali and Dharmendra-Hema Malini by invoking the provisions of bigamy law under Section 494 of the IPC. But, no Muslim organization has even cared to give a thought about this whatsoever.

Steps need to be taken to tackle such crimes
It is obvious that Hindu couples like Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali and Dharmendra-Hema Malini have time and again misused and abused Islam to fulfill their carnal desires, and several more would continue to do so in future as well. It is also obvious that such couples would be assisted by so-called Muslim clerics in fulfilling their dirty and lowly desires. The time has come now that such crimes need be stopped forthwith and these couples and Muslim clerics be severely punished through appropriate punitive action taken by respective community leaders as well as the government.

Following steps, in my opinion, would be appropriate enough to tackle such issues:
(1.) Make registration of marriages compulsory as per the directive of the Supreme Court of India. This should be compulsorily binding on people of all religious faiths, including Muslims and Christians, across the country. All India Muslim Personal Law Board in its last meeting had decided that marriage registration be kept a voluntary option since it may further complicate marital discords. The decision of AIMPLB is simply unfortunate and a great disservice to the entire Muslim community. This won’t complicate marital discords but would rather alleviate them if proper regulations were in place.

(2.) Make registration of conversions compulsory. The Law Ministry would do well to bring Law on conversions into place to stop fake conversions taking place. It has often been noticed that in several instances conversions have taken place merely to escape poverty and through inducements. Some conversions have taken place only for the sake of remarriage as has been the present cases with high-profile couples like Chander Mohan-Anuradha Bali and Dharmendra-Hema Malini. However, some conversions have been really genuine and out of ones own free will, which should indeed be respected. But, making registration of conversions compulsory across the country would stop fake conversions from taking place and in fact restore the glory of the respective religious faiths.

(3.) Relevant laws, including Muslim law, be amended to practically prohibit misuse of religion just for the sake of enjoying sex through second marriage. In fact, second marriage by a person after converting to Islam should be made a non-bailable offence even though first wife never objected to this obnoxious practice. There are instances of many Hindus adopting Islam symbolically only to enjoy a second marriage legally even though in practical life they continue to have ardent belief in Hinduism and perform all Hindu rituals in day-to-day life. Suitable laws should therefore be enacted to ban post-conversions marriages and severely penalize the persons involved.

(4.) The Government should make provisions to make registration of Muslim clerics compulsory. This is essential to bar fake clerics, who generally conduct such sham marriages and bring disrepute to their religion. There is need to bring Muslim clerics within government’s control so that their status of living be also uplifted. Most of the Muslim organizations like All India Muslim Personal Law Board, All India Muslim Majlise Mushawarat, All India Milli Council etc. are unrepresentative and do not represent entire Muslim community in India. The Government should also make registration of Imams of Mosques (Muslim prayer leaders) compulsory across the country since they perform the duties of prayer leaders in mosques as well as solemnise nikaahs whenever need be.

Islam now seeks justice. But the million-dollar question is after all from whom? In other words, who are the real culprits? Who are those responsible who couldn’t defend Islam from the onslaught of sham marriages and fake conversions? I consider both the Maulvis and couples like Chandra Mohan-Anuradha Bali and Dharmendra-Hema Malini equally responsible to bring such unpardonable disrespect to Islam. Those Muslim clerics who helped them convert to Islam and solemnized their nikaah, which was obviously for the sake of second marriage and not professing Islam in the true sense, should not be spared at all from penal action and stringent punishment from the Muslim community as such. It is now incumbent on the community leaders of both the religions and the Government to take strictest possible action and put an end to such illegal and defamatory activities.

Religious conversion for second marriage un-Islamic: Muslim clerics
By Khalid Akhter

New Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS) Muslim clerics have termed as "un-Islamic" and "unacceptable" conversion to Islam to escape legal complications of a second marriage, citing the example of Chander Mohan alias Chand Mohammed and Anuradha Bali alias Fiza whose apparent wedding of convenience is now showing signs of strain.

"Adopting Islam with an intention for second marriage is not only un-Islamic but against reason as well," renowned Muslim scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan told IANS.

The debate about religious conversion was triggered after then Haryana deputy chief minister Chander Mohan announced his second marriage to former law officer Anuradha Bali and their conversion to Islam Dec 17 last year. Chander Mohan is the father of three teenagers from his first marriage.

The much-hyped love affair soured sooner than expected after the rechristened couple of Chand Mohammad and Fiza fell apart. Chand suddenly left Fiza's home in Punjab's Mohali town Jan 28 and has been elusive since then.

Quoting from a hadith, Prophet Mohammed's saying, Khan said such conversion is "unacceptable" and "childish".

The author of around 200 books and a known authority on interpretation of the holy Quran said that embracing Islam "in its true spirit should be for the sake of truth".

"Conversion should not be for the sake of marriage or any personal motive. The motive of conversion should be truth... The realisation of the truth in a religion can be achieved only after in-depth study and discussions about the religion," Khan said.

To prevent such conversions, Khan laid emphasis on educating people about the sanctity of the institution of marriage and "not to take it as fun".

"It is not possible to check such conversions. We are living in a society which provides freedom on such aspects to every one. The only thing we can do is to educate people about the seriousness and sanctity of marriage. Marriage is not a fun thing and we need to make people understand this," Khan said.

A senior cleric of Darul Uloom, a highly revered seminary in Deoband town of Uttar Pradesh, also denounced the conversions with the objective of marrying again.

"Adopting Islam with the intention to have a second wife is un-Islamic, incorrect and not justifiable," said Qari Usman, an expert on hadith.

About the Chand-Fiza marriage and conversion, Usman said: "Although he (Chand) became a Muslim, the whole chain of events has come out in a way that has sent a wrong message about the religion in society. People should not use religion for such motives."
Usman has also been pro-vice chancellor of the seminary that attracts thousands of students from India and other countries.

Darul Ifta, the fatwa department of the Darul Uloom, has also slammed Chander Mohan, saying his conversion was a "lowly act".

Mufti Muqarram Ahmad, a leading cleric in Delhi, says accepting Islam should be in consonance with belief in the tenets of Islam and "not for using it for personal hidden motives".

"One cannot know the real intention of a person but using Islam for purposes like to have a second wife is not in the spirit of Islam," Ahmad said.

Chand-Fiza talaq: Ulema now talk of screening

15 Mar 2009, 0237 hrs IST
Manjari Mishra, TNN

LUCKNOW: The Haryanvi love story gone sour has left maulanas fuming, though for different reasons. While ultra conservatives lobby is incensed at the audacity of the former deputy chief minister Chandra Mohan for bending shariat to sneak in bigamy, radicals have raised a banner of revolt against "the error of judgment made by ulema in dubious cases". Their latest demand is to make a pre-marriage screening before a ulema reads out the nikah in a conversion cases.

Talking to TOI, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangimahali said that the issue will be raised in the next meeting of the executive council of the Islamic Centre of India. "In Chand-Fiza drama, the officiating maulvi should have been more cautious. The much hyped nikah had all ingredients of a phoney plot. The man was already married and a father of two, neither his family memebrs nor hers were present at the time of nikah. So it was not difficult to put two and two together under the circumstances. Had the ulema been a little more guarded or selective all this embarrassment could have been averted, Maulana Rasheed said.

Shaista Ambar, president of All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) dittoed the view. It must be made incumbent upon the ulema-e-deen to do a thorough screening of couples in such controversial cases. The maulvi in this particular instance should have insisted upon finding out the motive for the conversion of the high profile couple. Whether they were converting to Islam because of their faith in its tenets or just to serve their ulterior purpose, she said.

Interestingly, while young hawks were vociferous in their demand for guidelines in conversion cases the orthodox lobby was more restrained. Shahar Qazi, Lucknow, Mufti Abul Irfan slammed Chandra Mohan for the lowly act. "Yeh nikah ya talaq nahin makkari hai," said the septuagenarian cleric. Culprits like the Haryana politician need to be ostracised and shunned by the public, he added. However, muftis have little or no role to play in such matters he claimed.

Meanwhile Darul-uloom Deoband distanced itself totally from the sordid saga. Mufti Habiburehman the spokesperson of darul qaza declined to make any "verbal comment". The seminary had on December 10 last year given its approval to the nikah. The two member panel had even said that "there was enough evidence to suggest that Chand Miyan did not resort to conversion for perpetrating a fraud."

The matter will certainly not end here, said Maulana Khalid. The convent educated maulana claimed that he would personally lead an awareness campaign among the religious heads who need to be extremely careful in cases like this which are potent enough to vitiate communal harmony.

THRESHOLD India 2009 – Promoting Entrepreneurship Amongst Muslim Youth

Islam has permitted, and in fact encouraged business. The Holy Qur’an states: "Allah has made business lawful for you" (2 : 275). The early Muslims, who engaged in trade and traveled to distant lands in connection with business, were responsible for the spread of Islam in East and West Africa, and East Asia. However, in the present times business has taken a backseat in the scheme of things of Muslims, particularly in India. Today, a sense of despondency is writ large on the faces of Muslim youth. Majority of them believe that Muslims are still considered the fringe elements of society. Before them are myriad challenges and the issues concerning them most includes discrimination; lack of opportunities; communalism; poverty; pollution; population; corruption; lack of civic sense; reservation; violence; second class citizen status; terrorism; lack of infrastructure; unemployment; illiteracy; inequality between men and women; and caste barriers. Truly, for the past two decades these issues have also not changed. Their fears are therefore real, and not unfounded. But all is not lost yet. There is still a glimmer of hope amid this despondency. This hope emerges from the resilient nature of the Indian body polity. The people of this plural, multi-faith Indian nation have together battled and defeated communal and anarchist forces on umpteen occasions. Muslim youth need to shirk their fear of alienation and strengthen resolve to emerge stronger in the face of adversity with renewed vigour. The need of the hour is to gain quality education, particularly in the field of technology, and take up entrepreneurship with gusto. This would not only enrich them and their family, but also benefit the Indian nation as such. The new world order is taking shape at a furious pace, and Muslim youth should not lag behind in lapping up manifold opportunities coming their way. Also, the Indian nation should not shirk its responsibilities and turn a blind eye towards this significant minority, or else how can our great nation even dream of emerging a superpower if Muslims – 15% of its population – are left behind in contributing their bit for the nation’s development.

Shahid Sayed, a Civil Engineer with an MSCE from USA, has undertaken the onerous task of promoting entrepreneurship amongst the Muslim youth through his enterprising programme ‘Threshold India 2009’. Mr. Sayed is currently working as a Civil Engineer and completing his MBA in USA. He is planning to return to India in 6 months to take up his passion ‘Threshold India’ movement full time. ‘Threshold India’ movement envisages offering training and resources to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, in coming up with ideas or products, potentially leading up to their own businesses. More importantly, in fostering a belief in themselves and a ‘can do’ attitude. The idea behind 'Threshold India 2009' is to promote entrepreneurship amongst the Muslim youth, to bring them closer to the mainstream and make them committed global citizens that value life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as a goal worth achieving by their own efforts.

In his write-up, Mr. Sayed shares his experience about his interaction with Maharashtra College students during his session on promoting entrepreneurship amongst Muslim youth. Mr. Sayed’s experience here was really exhilarating, an eye-opener, and precursor of things waiting to unfold in future. Readers are welcome to give their comments, and share their vision if any.

Promoting entrepreneurship amongst Muslim youth

By Shahid Sayed
I am a product of the "Chor Bazaar Municipal Urdu School". Due to circumstances that are not at all uncommon, I had a childhood and youth wherein every step of my education was both a struggle and then a marvel to have achieved. When I see around me, in the current younger generation, despair, helplessness and frustration at being left behind, I am bothered. More so because deep in my heart I do believe that today's youth is far more resourceful and enterprising than my generation ever could be. All through my MBA in the US last year, I have been mulling over this: how can we bridge this gap.

On 5th January 2009, I walked into the Maharashtra College, seeking some of the student leaders of the college. As it turned out, there were no student leaders around and I was directed to the Vice Principal's office. Vice Principal Mr. Waheed, the Principal Dr Shakeel and Professor M.Z. Shahid were most encouraging and within minutes, a meeting of students of Maharashtra College was arranged for 7th January.

Before I began my session with students I asked them about the challenges they are facing today. The girls were very forthcoming with information and listed these issues: discrimination; lack of opportunities; communalism; poverty; pollution; population; corruption; lack of civic sense; reservation; violence; second class citizen status; terrorism; lack of infrastructure; unemployment; illiteracy; inequality between men and women; and caste barriers.

If someone had asked us this question during my college days I am pretty sure we would have spelt out the same issues. In other words, two decades have passed but the issues have not changed.

This pretty much summarizes how the Muslim youth believes it has benefited from the economic liberalization policies that have been promoted by various governments in the last decade. And we see that Muslims believe that Muslims are still considered the fringe elements of society. How can India be a successful nation if 15% of its population fails to participate in the monumental opportunities offered by the new world order?

And thus was initiated the dialogue on entrepreneurship at the Maharashtra College. A sweet young relative from SNDT brought her entire class to the forum and it became an SNDT v/s Maharashtra College competition. I would have been happy with a group of 30/40 students as audience. Instead, we ended up with twice that size of enthusiastic participants.

My young guests were in for a surprise when they were divided into 8 groups and offered Rs. 1,000 each. With the help of a few tips and insights, they had the freedom to do whatever they chose to do with the money. All I wanted in return was for them to engage in some creative brainstorming to generate ideas, utilize their talents in making the money grow. It was impressed on them that it was not important if they made 50 paisa or 200 rupees, or even if they lost their allotted amount, as long as they made a sincere and honest effort in going through the process.

After the initial blank stares and plenty of giggles from behind the hijaab, expressing absolute surprise, their enthusiasm and energy took over the classroom and spread like magic. Some of them had doubts - could this offer be real, others accepted it immediately as a challenge, eager to prove themselves. It was a great sight to see a gamut of emotions run through the faces. They hesitantly and then more confidently expressed their dreams and aspirations, their fears and apprehensions. The raw plans, their own fearless predictions of all that they could do, to me, was a sign that these were indeed the stars of the future of our nation, as we move ahead in life with 8% GDP growth all around us.

A week later, all eight groups showed up with the stories of their struggles and activities undertaken to 'earn and grow' the money. Attentively listening this time around were three entrepreneurs of repute – Piyul Mukherjee, Pia Molback-Verbic and Rashmi Bansal, who later guided the youngsters with various tips and insights… the importance of studying the end customer and her needs; the value of value added services as versus a mere 'trading'; of ethics and of a social conscience.

The stars of this new venture were indeed the students. Their recounting of their efforts and their stories of sailing in uncharted waters, their successes and a few failures held the audience spellbound.

As expected the students had felt overwhelmed initially by the task of using Rs. 1,000 to make maximum money in just one week. However, each group mentioned how their initial fears were tackled, as the creative ideas started flowing. From selling handbags, earrings, attar, holding food festivals, making PAN cards for a lower fee to applying mehndi to foreign visitors at the Gateway of India.

Although two winning teams were chosen, the theme of the day was truly that everyone was a winner. Not a single team had come back with a loss. Even those initiatives that had failed to beget any profit had been quickly replaced by other activities that brought in some extra money. More importantly, they all succeeded – not just in making money – but in learning about themselves, about teamwork, their sense of self-worth, their so far uncapitalized talents, and about turning unrealized needs into awesome business opportunities.

The enthusiasm can be seen in the comments received from the students later: -

"We never believed we could do something like this. Thanks a lot for the opportunity."Ansari Nazreen, Maharshtra College

"We are feeling more confident than ever in our life. We believe we can start any business, even with Rs. 500. That smell and taste of profit, which is earned with our own effort, is mindboggling and addictive. We will continue to do better. "Rukhsar Khan, SNDT

"This has taught us diplomacy and forced us to prioritize our efforts. We even spoke with people we have been avoiding so far. We left no stone unturned to reach our goal."Sameen Mushtaq, SNDT

"Our group became a better team. We are more in union than before and enjoying our new bonding. We can take any new challenge."Monica Sharma, SNDT

“Thanks for the great effort. We need more people like you in our community.”Alam Siddqui, Maharashtra College

Thank you sir for this opportunity. My mom is so proud of me and everyone in the family is supporting our efforts. Its been a great experience."Farhat Ansari, Maharastra College

As youngsters in colleges break the "psychological boundaries" that comes with living in a particular neighborhood or belonging to a certain strata of the society, we believe this young generation of India will break free from the past. There is just no other option available. Not anymore!

Studies have proved that there is a direct link between poverty, education and social ills in any society. In case of our Muslim community, violence and terrorism is another dimension that is now added in the long list of woes faced already. Often caught in a vicious cycle, the lack of proper education, and subsequently lack of opportunities deprives Muslim youth of many jobs they could have capitalized upon. Instead, despair and distrust becomes part of daily life.
For a religion wherein the first convert was a businesswoman and the third caliph was the wealthiest man in Arabia, the followers of Islam in the recent past have been turning away from financial pursuits and prosperity choosing instead a life of "self imposed poverty" and a sense of false contentment.

This continued disillusionment with anything financial has brought in followers that desire everything but a life of luxury and comfort. Granted that money cannot buy everything, its presence does offer a sense of security among humans and acts as a safeguard against losing rationality.

I believe if we want to make this world a safer, equitable and prosperous place, we must allow and promote each individual of the world irrespective of the religion and faith believed in, to have an equal stake in the growth and prosperity that has been going around for a few hundred years. Yet, to all purposes, it appears to have bypassed Muslims, 24% population of the world.

P.S.: If you are like me, and believe that every step counts in this journey, do join me in this experiment - with awesome results already coming in - at Orkut (Threshold India 2009).

Abdullakutty’s suspension exposes CPI-M’s anti-development, anti-Muslim attitude

Abdullakutty’s suspension exposes CPI-M’s anti-development, anti-Muslim attitude

By Danish Ahmad Khan

CPI-M’s Muslim MP from Kerala A.P. Abdullakutty would have never dreamt that praising Chief Minister Narendra Modi for bringing astounding industrial development and turning Gujarat into a model state would lead to his suspension from the party. Abdullakutty, a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Cannanore (Kannur), was suspended from the party on 18 January for one year. Earlier, CPI-M district committee had served a notice asking him to explain why he showered praises on Modi for his efforts to bring development to Gujarat, which was at variance with the party’s view.

It may be recalled that Abdullakutty showered praise on Modi while addressing Indian Media Forum in Dubai on 28 December last year. “Today, Gujarat is the most investor-friendly state in the country. That’s the only state where every investor gets a red-carpet welcome, no matter how much he invests. Gujarat is getting investments, and industrialists are fond of Chief Minister Narendra Modi,” Abdullakutty said. When asked about shifting of Nano project from CPI-M ruled West Bengal to BJP-ruled Gujarat, he remarked: “Several chief ministers were ready to welcome Nano project in their state but Tata opted for Gujarat. This was only because Modi gave the best alternative proposal.” Asking to emulate development model of Gujarat, Abdullkutty said that Left should ponder why Ratan Tata shifted his project to Gujarat.

The upright young Muslim MP Abdullakutty now asks after all what wrong did he do that evoked party’s wrath. “I have not made any mistake. I am very sad as the party has not been convinced by my explanation. I talked about Modi in Dubai while replying to a question by an investor who asked why he should invest in a state, which witnessed 82 hartals in last year. The 2002 pogrom in which Muslims were massacred could not take away the fact that Modi had brought investments to Gujarat,” Abdullakutty said, and reiterates that Modi deserves full marks for pursuing his development agenda, but his communal agenda should be vigorously denounced. “In fact, I prefer to recognize both sides of Modi’s personality – one pro-development, and the other communal. My party CPI-M, on the other hand, is not ready to separate Modi from his communal persona, which is really unfair and unethical,” feels Abdullakutty. However, now with Abdullakutty's suspension, it is ulikely that he is going to again contest coming Lok Sabha polls until his suspension is revoked.

This is, however, not for the first time that Abdullakutty had to face wrath for "defying" CPI-M’s ideology. Earlier, the CPI-M had censured and demoted Abdullakutty for traveling to Makkah for performing Umrah [mini Hajj] in the first week of June last year. Abdullakutty, who was an area committee member, was demoted to a simple member in the local committee after the district committee took disciplinary action against him on 19 June. The party first "charge-sheeted" him for performing Umrah in Makkah. Later, conscious of the fact that the decision could invite backlash from the Muslim community, the party claimed Kutty was punished for delivering a speech against bandhs and hartals.
Abdullakutty, commenting on the party action, had then said: "Disciplinary action was initiated against me after I returned from Makkah. The so-called controversial speech is an old issue anyway. A number of leaders had aired the same view on bandhs and hartals." He added, "The timing of the party's disciplinary action against me has made people believe that I have been convicted for performing Umrah. But the party denies that the action was caused by my having undertaken the religious trip."

It may be recalled that even West Bengal transport minister Subhas Chakraborty was photographed offering puja at a Kali temple in Bengal’s Birbhum district. In Kerala, two CPI-M legislators took their oath “in the name of God” in the assembly in May 2006. The party squirmed in embarrassment in both the cases but took no action against these Marxist “believers”, who would have otherwise been suspended or expelled from the party. Abdullakutty had to face disciplinary action of being demoted only after undertaking the Muslim religious ritual of performing Umrah.

In the case of Subhas Cakraborty, the then West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu reprimanded him in public. The CPI-M’s Bengal unit also summoned Chakraborty to the party’s state committee meeting and asked him to explain his position after the media widely covered his visit to the temple. Later, CPI-M Bengal state secretary Biman Bose clarified that the transport minister was “neither show-caused nor censured” but was asked to “clear the air” in public. In CPI-M’s Kerala state unit things are no different either. Here, too, the party has never dared to reprimand or punish the “religious-minded” legislators Aisha Potti, the Marxist-ruled state’s first Brahmin woman MLA, and M.M. Monayi, a practising Christian, for taking oath “in the name of God”.

On the contrary, Abdullakutty’s demotion for performing religious ritual of Umrah and his suspension for praising Modi for turning Gujarat into a development model clearly smacks of the biasness the CPI-M holds against its Muslim members. The actions of CPI-M against Abdullakutty prove that the party is a thorough hypocrite, anti-development and anti-Muslim. Will the CPI-M stalwarts care to explain why the Left parties backed the National Front government headed by Vishwanath Pratap Singh when the ‘communal’, ‘anti-minority’ Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was part of the same government? Will the CPI-M bigwigs please explain why they allied with the BJP in voting against the Congress Party-led UPA government-backed-Indo-US Nuclear deal? Before voting against the Indo-US Nuclear deal, Left parties were in alliance with the UPA government. After all, what ‘national interests’ did the Left parties serve in allying with the ‘communal’ BJP on these two occasions? I don’t think that any Muslim CPI-M legislator or MP would have even dared to perform ‘Umrah’ or ‘Hajj’ after Abdullakutty’s demotion. Will the CPI-M functionaries or Muslim Marxists please clear their stand on this ‘discriminatory’ issue?

Abdullakutty rightly feels that CPI-M needs to change its attitude, particularly towards its Muslim members. Belief is a personal affair. The Marxist lexicon nowhere indicates that a communist should necessarily be an atheist. Yet the party frowns on believers, particularly Muslims, who want to follow the Left ideology. As per the CPI-M brand of 'secularism', backing Muslims on the Amarnath shrine land transfer issue, and staging demonstrations against Israeli brutalities in the Gaza Strip are important things. But when it comes to allowing a party MP from the same community to practice his religious beliefs, the knives are brought out against him.

Last but not least, praising Chief Minister Narendra Modi for turning Gujarat into a development model is neither a crime nor this means that his communal brand of politics would also get approval just because the person happens to be the same. CPI-M in West Bengal has already lost Nandigram assembly bypolls at the hands of Trinamool Congress. This should already sound alarm bells for Left parties. In India, today corruption and development have become important agenda to win elections. The days of communal politics are over. Parties across political affiliations need to give a serious thought over this. Or else…. better they be prepared to fade into oblivion!

Israel As Fountainhead Of World Terrorism: A Chronological Record Of Its Terrorist Activities

[Israeli-Palestinian conflict has always perturbed the civil society in India, and particularly Indian Muslims remain concerned about this as ever. Shamshul Islam, Reader in political science in a Delhi University college, has compiled a chronological record of Israel’s terrorist activities, which is an excellent and valuable scholarly compilation. However, I believe that more than Israel and the US, it is Fatah and Hamas who are responsible for the sufferings of the Palestinian people. Readers are requested to go through this interesting posting and are welcome to send their comments.]

THE ISRAELI-Hamas conflict and horrendous killings in Gaza Strip has drawn massive worldwide protests, and this includes protests in Israel too. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has always perturbed the civil society in India, and Indian Muslims particularly continue to remain concerned about this. Muslims in Hyderabad, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and other places in the country staged demonstrations calling immediate halt to merciless killings inflicted upon women, children and other residents of Gaza.

After three-week-long air and ground offensive by the Israeli army in Gaza, a unilateral ceasefire came into effect on 18 January 2009 with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announcing that troops would stop fighting. The Hamas movement, against whom this operation was directed, however said that it would not respect any ceasefire so long as Israeli troops remained in the Gaza Strip.

This truce, which is undoubtedly a temporary one, is being again seen as yet another lull before the storm. But, after all, who is responsible for this? The entire world accuses Israel of indulging in war crimes against the helpless Palestinian people, and its godfather United States collaborating in these crimes. However, to me, it is not only Israel and US alone, but also Fatah-Hamas duo that are greatly responsible for the sufferings of their own Palestinian people. In fact, sometimes it seems as though Fatah and Hamas are both playing into the hands of Israel and US.

The genesis of the Israeli bombardment in Gaza lies in the ongoing Fatah-Hamas conflict, also referred to as the Palestinian Civil War. The conflict is called ‘Wakseh’ among Palestinians, meaning humiliation, ruin, and collapse as a result of self-inflicted damage. This Conflict of Brothers began in 2006 and has continued, in one form or another, into 2009. The majority of the fighting is occurring in the Gaza Strip where fighting began after Hamas’ legislative victories. Hamas remains in control of the Gaza Strip. The tensions between Hamas and Fatah began to rise in 2005 after the death of longtime PLO leader Yasser Arafat who died on 11 November 2004, and intensified after Hamas won a majority in the Palestinian National Authority elections of January 2006. In his nationally televised speech on 21 June 2008, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas denounced Hamas’ leaders as “murderous terrorists” who had carried out a “coup” in the Gaza Strip. President Abbas dismissed the 3-month-old “national unity” government headed by PM Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, outlawed Hamas affiliated militias and appointed an “emergency” government led by former World Bank economist Salam Fayyad. Hamas has since refused to recognise the legitimacy of the Abbas’s appointed emergency government.

Israel, the US and the European Union, which had previously demanded a popularly elected PA government, responded to Hamas’s 2006 election win by imposing a crippling financial embargo on the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. US President George Bush accused Hamas of “assaulting” Palestinian democracy, and lifted the financial embargo only after President Abbas dismissed Haniyeh-led government. Israel has been working relentlessly to deepen the rift between Hamas and Fateh. This is very much obvious as seen in the recent killings in Hamas-dominated Gaza Strip and sparing Fatah-dominated West Bank. Israel has also worked very hard to weaken Fatah and President Abbas by undermining their credibility by not honouring the promises it made to them. Israel used the Oslo accords and the “peace process” to divide Palestinians. President Abbas rejects the armed nature of the intifada and adamantly supports popular and peaceful resistance and political negotiations to achieve Palestinian national rights. On the contrary, Hamas continues to call for the destruction of the State of Israel. This conflict of interests between Fatah and Hamas has subsequently weakened the Palestinian national movement. The power mongering by both the parties in controlling the Palestinian enclaves West Bank and Gaza Strip individually has only inflicted a severe blow on the psyche of Palestinian people and thereby leading to incessant bloodshed and brutalities being inflicted by the Israeli army. The actions of both Hamas and Fatah have only buttressed the Israeli expansionist policy and extending its continued occupation of Palestinian territories forever. Why can’t one believe that under the circumstances Hamas and Fatah are increasingly acting as mere pawns in the hands of Israel and US. Israel wants a Palestinian Authority with authority only to control its people rather than any land and that it continues to act as Israel’s policeman. Fatah and Hamas need to see through this Israeli design and join hands to strengthen the Palestinian national movement and allay the sufferings of their people.

The world governments and civil society cannot remain oblivious and mute spectators of the holocaust being inflicted on the Palestinian people. Former US president Jimmy Carter in a June 19 speech at a human rights conference in Dublin also criticised Bush’s policy toward Hamas, saying Washington’s refusal to accept the outcome of the “free and fair” January 2006 Palestinian Legislative Council election was “criminal”. Carter said, “The United States and Israel decided to punish all the people in Palestine and did everything they could to deter a compromise between Hamas and Fatah.” Even former national unity government information minister Mustafa Barghouti in an interview with the Australian Lateline TV program on June 19 observed that the division of the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) between a Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and a Fatah-controlled West Bank “serves exactly the Israeli interests of imposing their own reality on the ground which we see through the building of the [separation] wall, the expansion of settlements and transforming the Palestinian entity into clusters of prison-like ghettos. If the Israelis want to empower Mr Abbas really, they will declare they are ready to end occupation, stop building the wall, stop settlements building, announce they are ready to allow East Jerusalem to be the capital of Palestinian state and then Mr Abbas will be the hero of all Palestinians.” He went onto say that this would not happen because the Israeli plan for the PA “is only a limited self-governing government that has control on people but not on land, not on water, not with sovereignty” and that Tel Aviv wants a PA regime that will “suppress its own people on behalf of the Israelis, some kind of a security sub-agent for the Israeli side. That was the dream of Israelis when they signed Oslo… The problem remains the same. The cause of all what we see today is this Israeli military occupation, which has been here for 40 years, longer than any other occupation in modern history.”

Israel As Fountainhead Of World Terrorism: A Chronological Record Of Its Terrorist Activities

Israel, a Zionist theocratic state is the real harbinger of the modern terrorism, is a fact known to the whole civilized world, specially the people of Palestine, who have been at the receiving end of the Zionist terror-network for more than 6 decades. Israel as a state was forced on the peace-loving people of Palestine in 1948 but long before it the Zionist terrorist groups had been blasting buildings, burning villages and killing people. The Zionist terrorist gangs were not targeting only Palestinians both Muslims and Christians and their properties but also UNO officials and its offices in the West Asia who were there to supervise peace. Today Israel and its patron in barbarism; USA (and its lackeys) and United Nations itself may be oblivious of this reality but here are reproduced two sets of UNO documents, which long back underlined the fact that Israel and Zionist gangs are the fountain-head of modern day terrorism.

The first document was prepared by a UN Committee and released on October 1, 1948. It was prepared for Mr. Ralphe Bunche, New UN Commissioner to Palestine who assumed charge after the tragic assassination of Count Folke Bernadotte by identified Jewish terrorists on September 17, 1948.

The foreword of the report said:
"This report is a compilation of all identified terrorist attacks on British, American and Arab individuals and entities in the assassination of the British Resident Minister in the Middle East on November 6, 1944 by members of the terrorist Jewish Stern gang to the assassination of Count Bernadotte on September 17, 1948 by members of this same gang of fanatics.

This information is compiled from reports of the US Department of State, the British Foreign Office and various American and British press services."

This report listed 167 major terrorist acts indulged by the Zionist gangs between 1944 and 1948, not only in West Asia but in Europe also. We are reproducing here some of the prominent acts of Israeli terrorism from the UN report in a chronological order as listed in the original report. However, this report also throws light on how west had started capitulating to Zionist terrorism.

Also killed in the attack was French Col. Andre Serot, chief of France's 100-man contingent in the unarmed UN truce-observer team.

UNO Resolutions Aganst Israeli Terror
The Zionist terrorism continued unabated with the establishment of the theocratic state of Israel. This continued despite condemnation by the UNO and world community except USA. From 1967 to 1989 the UN Security Council passed 88 resolutions in which actions of Israel were either "condemned," "censured," or "deplored". During the same period the UN General Assembly passed 429 resolutions against Israel were passed and this totalitarian state was openly condemned 321 times. It is to be noted here that about 50 resolutions condemning Israel were aborted as USA vetoed the same. Israel ignored every single resolution. The number of resolutions criticizing or condemning Israel is unmatched by the record of any other nation.
